A,ll students are academic language learners! All teachers are academic language teachers! It is necessary for students to have a solid grasp on the language of math to ensure that students have a deep understanding of the mathematics. Mathematics is not a universal language and in order to make mathematics accessible for ALL students educators need to spend time helping students develop their academic language. Explicit vocabulary needs to take place before, during, or after each math lesson. It is important that the vocabulary being taught is from all three types of vocabulary tiers. Tier 1 is "every day" vocabulary and these are words that we hear/use in our everyday life. Although this might be "every day" vocabulary for teachers as professional adults, these might be unfamiliar words to culturally and linguistically diverse students. Tier 2 vocabulary, is cross curricular vocabulary. Tier 3 vocabulary, is content specific vocabulary. To support students in internalizing vocabulary they need multiple opportunities to use these words using all four language domains. As students practice the vocabulary by speaking, writing, reading, and listening (SWiRL) in the CONTEXT of a math task, they are deepening their understanding of math concepts.
